The St. Mary’s Choir program seeks to provide quality choral opportunities to those students who enjoy music, especially singing. With frequent opportunities to perform and sing in public, each singer contributes to the overall success of each performance. St. Mary’s Catholic School has two choirs: Junior High Choir (grades 6 – 8) and a fifth grade choir. Students in these choirs develop self-reliance, personal integrity, self-discipline, social awareness, a commitment to excellence, and a sense of confidence in their abilities. The children share the results of these discoveries through performance, resulting in providing entertainment for the community and visibility for St. Mary’s educational environment. Through the study and performance of quality music, students develop vocal technique, music reading skills, creativity, and expressive artistry. The Choir program strives to create an atmosphere that encourages students to respect the uniqueness of others, to take risks that foster individual growth, and to continue their development into self-assured young Catholic adults.
Sixteen members of the Junior High Choir had the honor of performing for Archbishop Gomez and archdiocese dignitaries, Monday, January 30, 2006. The performance was held at the Chancery and precluded the archbishop’s press conference to “kick off” Catholic Schools Week. Before the choir sang, Father Tony and Archbishop Gomez were photographed with the choir and afterwards the archbishop personally congratulated each student. The choir then proceeded to the Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake University for a private tour lead by former St. Mary’s School principal, Sr. Alexia. The choir had the wonderful opportunity to sing in the historic chapel. Attending both events and in constant support of the students were Mary Ann Murchison, accompanist and Billy Pahl, Principal.
