The primary goal of the curriculum and instruction in St. Mary’s School is to provide those learning experiences most conducive to providing students with the virtues, knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary for each student's spiritual, intellectual, social, cultural and physical development in keeping with the stated philosophy of each school. The students of St. Mary’s are guided by a solid curriculum that incorporates the Archdiocesan Curriculum and the state standards (TEKS). RELIGION – St. Mary’s is blessed with the elements needed to create a Catholic environment in which students are able to grow spiritually. At the heart is a dedicated group of Christian teachers who witness and teach Gospel values. Daily religious instruction includes Bible study, prayer, and church doctrine. Students learn the value of Christian service and are given opportunities to provide service to their parish, community, and the world wide church. The religion program consists of: Daily religious instruction and community prayer Weekly liturgies Preparation for sacraments of First Communion and Reconciliation Service Projects Integration of Catholic teachings into all content areas.
EARLY CHILDHOOD – The Early Childhood Program, consisting of 3K and 4K classes, is based on the belief that a young child’s development is greatly enhanced when the child is placed in a well-designed educational preschool program. There is an emphasis on the young child’s conceptual learning, especially the acquisition of language and literacy. The program provides a challenging curriculum that engages the child in thinking, reasoning, and communicating with others. CORE SUBJECTS – Religion, English, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies form the base curriculum from Kindergarten through 8th grade. The daily instruction students receive in these areas develops their knowledge base, and encourages growth in critical thinking skills. ACHIEVEMENT TESTS – Each spring the students in grades 1 to 8 take the Stanford Achievement Test battery. The test compares St. Mary’s students to three different comparison groups. The students receive a national ranking, which compares scores to the national norm for all students. Students also receive a Catholic ranking, which compares scores to students in other Catholic schools across the nation. Students are also given a local ranking, which compares the scores to other Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The scores provide parents feedback about their child’s progress, and the scores are also used by the school to measure the success of the curriculum TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION – Students become comfortable with computer use; every classroom has networked computers, and the library and the two computer labs provide additional computer access. Every student uses the computer regularly; typical computer use would include: Educational games Keyboarding skills Accelerated Reader Program Star Reading Internet Research Applications such as Word, Excel, and Power Point
FINE ARTS – All students have the opportunity for art and music instruction. The weekly classes allow students to explore, create, and express themselves. HONOR ROLL – St. Mary’s recognizes outstanding student achievement with the Honors and High Honors awards every nine weeks. Students in grades 4 to 8 with core averages from 85 to 93 are listed on the Honors Roll, and students with averages above 94 are listed on the High Honors Roll. ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS – Students in grades 1 to 8 participate in the Private School Interscholastic Association competition annually.
